What to Do When You See Your Car Leaking Oil

Most car owners at some point may notice that your car whilst parked, is leaving a small pool of oil on your garage floor or driveway. This a very common problem for many types of vehicles, of all ages, makes and models.

Oil leakage can be caused by several different factors and an oil leak could either be a simple problem that you can fix on your own as a car owner, or it could be a more serious fault that needs a professional car mechanic to fix it.

What Does Oil Do?

Oil is used in your engine to reduce friction and heat by lubricating the engine. Over time friction causes wear and tear within your engine and also causes excess heat when driving, that’s why using a high-quality oil is a very important part of the general maintenance and servicing of your vehicle.

Oil also helps to reduce rust and corrosion as it reduces oxidation in your motor which maintains optimal performance, and extends the useful life of your car, and its parts.

Engine oils also have a cooling function that keeps the engine running at a safe temperature, via different additives that are included in the engine oil mix.

Types of Oil Leakages

  1. Engine oil: This is used to lubricate the vehicle’s engine. When this oil starts to leak, it leaves a trail of brown fluid and can appear as either a dry or wet stain on the ground depending on how long the car has been leaking for.
  2. Transmission oil: This fluid is used in cars with automatic transmission, which helps again to lubricate and condition the additional parts of the car that look after the automatic transmission.
  3. Coolant leakage: Oil as a coolant is more efficient than water as a coolant. These are called “oil based” coolant. When there is a green or orange liquid the leakage is probably from the coolant rather than from engine oil.

Possible Causes of Oil Leakage

Oil leakage can be caused by a couple of things ranging from cracks in the engines casing, broken seals or faulty gaskets. It could also be something as simple as the oil level is higher than the recommended amount and is escaping due to increased pressure and heat after normal use.

If your car is leaking oil and has recently been in an accident, and has not been inspected by a professional mechanic, then it is very important for you to book a car inspection to repair any damage that may have been caused.
